Police say they have found no criminality after reports that a man attempted to snatch a schoolgirl and have now closed the investigation.

There was panic across social media this week, after a Kilwinning woman wrote on Facebook saying she saw a man try to abduct a schoolgirl.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Following substantial enquiries by officers at Ayrshire Division after a report of a child having been approached by a man, at Edzell Row in Kilwinning, on Monday 20 February, enquiries are complete and no criminality has been established. Advice and guidance was given."

On Monday, Chief Inspector Brian Shaw, Area Commander for North Ayrshire said:“We can confirm that police enquiries are underway following a report of a man having approached a child, at Edzell Row in Kilwinning, as she made her way to school at around 0855 hours on Monday, February 20 2017.

“The girl was not harmed in any way and enquiries are at an early stage to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"There have been no other reported incidents of this nature.

"I would like to reassure the community that officers are conducting door to door enquiries and checking CCTV.

"Additional patrols are in the area and anyone with information or concerns are asked to approach those officers or contact police at Irvine Police Station via 101."
