A KILWINNING charity is looking to pedal into the future as they look to get everyone in Ayrshire on their bikes.

On Yer Bike Ayrshire is based at the old Dirrans Centre in the town and they have huge plans to make Kilwinning the cycle capital of Ayrshire.

With their own in-house workshops, bike sales room and cafe, everything you need is in one handy location and more is set to come over the next three years.

Fixing up and getting six or seven bikes per day ready for sales after recovering them from scrapyards is one of the key components of the charity and the bikes they fix range from beginners bikes for children right through to adult road bikes.

Bob Wright, the mechanic at On Yer Bike, said: “We’ve done hundreds, maybe thousands and have sold or given away about 250 bikes.”

The aim is to get funding for apprentices who have shown that they are interested in the sport and helping get older and damaged bikes back to their best.

Alec Muir, who is involved in the day to day running of the centre said: “They would go to Glasgow to do an accredited course at the Glasgow Bike Centre.

"The whole thing is to create Ayrshire’s first cycle centre. The intention is to have a cycle speedway track and we can start clubs all over Ayrshire. There is one in Glasgow, Dunfermline and Edinburgh but there’s none in Ayrshire. Cycle Scotland are interested in us getting one.

“Eventually, if we can raise the money we want to get an outdoor velodrome where people can come on their normal bikes instead of having to go to Glasgow and hire the real track bikes.”

Although they have a number of bikes in storage, the charity are always on the look out for people to donate bikes.

Alec added: “If someone hands one in instead of taking it to the scrappy it can be a lot less work and it can be faster for us.”

A road cycle group has been launched called “Abbey Roads” for beginners, experienced riders and families to cycle together.

And their cafe is the hidden diamond with Czech chef Lucas Pehr, pictured with Lindy Hamlin, showcasing the talents that have previously impressed Barack Obama, George W Bush and other famous names.

He has worked across Europe, in the US and in Michelin-starred kitchens as well as alongside Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay and all profits brought in are put back into the charity to ensure continued success for the cause.

The cycle group meets on a Tuesday and a Thursday for training rides and on a Sunday for a leisurely ride where people can go at their own pace.

And they are starting a disabled section where riders with mobility issues can get involved with the sport too.

There will also be a bike sale every Saturday from 10am-4pm starting this week.
