Ayrshire's four MPs teamed up last week to host an event in Westminster to promote the region ahead of a UK Government decision on the Ayrshire Growth Deal.

The two-part event, organised by MPs Philippa Whitford, Alan Brown, Patricia Gibson and Corri Wilson focused on Ayrshire’s exceptional and award-winning food and drink producers in the morning, and some of our key industries in the afternoon.

It also provided an opportunity to promote the Ayrshire Growth Deal to Government ministers, MPs and their staff ahead of the Spring Budget in March.

Speaking after the event, Central Ayrshire MP Dr Philippa Whitford said: “The Taste of Ayrshire event showcased some of our best and most unusual food products, ranging from Kilmarnock steak pies and fine cheeses to smoked salmon, venison or boar chorizo and Haggis pakora. Guests were blown away by the variety, quality and elegant presentation.

“The businesses on display in the Ayrshire Showcase in the afternoon demonstrated the breadth and depth of potential in Ayrshire, from life-sciences and tourism to aero-space, which could be released with funding through an Ayrshire Growth Deal.

“It was good that representatives from the three Local Authorities were able to meet with officers from the Scottish Office and the Treasury to start discussions to try and secure development funding from the UK Government to match the commitment of the Scottish Government.

Patricia Gibson MP for North Ayrshire & Arran said: “Ayrshire has a well-deserved reputation for its outstanding food and drink produce, with samples of cheese, ice cream, whisky, beer and much more very much enjoyed by those in attendance. A key aim of the event will be to secure a commitment to the Ayrshire Growth Deal from the UK Government – similar to the support for the ambitious proposals which has already been given by the Scottish Government. A total of £360 million is being sought to deliver the Growth Deal.

North Ayrshire Council leader Joe Cullinane said: “The Ayrshire Growth Deal offers a real chance to make a lasting and meaningful transformation to the Ayrshire economy. This isn’t about a short-term fix – it’s about creating an economic legacy which will have a positive impact for generations to come.

“We are hopeful that, when the full scope of our ambitions are detailed on Wednesday, it will help secure that commitment we need from Westminster to make them a reality.”
