A DREGHORN-born man has been honoured with a British Empire Medal after raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity with a mammoth world record-breaking cycling challenge.

Scott Thompson pedalled across Indonesia, the country he now calls home, back in 2015 on a gruelling rickshaw challenge - raising a staggering £289,288 for kids charities.

He also got the Guinness world record for the longest journey by cycle rickshaw/pedicab covering 2,597.2km (1,613 miles).

Now he will be receiving the BEM, alongside his wife who is also being honoured with a BEM for her charity work, and his parents back home are understandably gushing with pride.

Mum Diane Thompson said: “We're both exceptionally proud, we’re so proud of both of them. It’s great recognition of the work he’s put in and his support for the community in Indonesia.

“They knew for three weeks but didn’t even tell us, my other son phoned and let us know.

“They’re both very modest they don’t shout from rooftops about anything and just get on with it."

The 49-year-old former Greenwood Academy pupil has lived in the capital city of Jakarta for the last 12 years while working as a mining engineer for a coal company.

Scott’s fundraising adventure saw him travel across eight provinces all in aid of charities the YCAB Foundation, Mary’s Cancer Kiddies, Yayasan Puspita and Yayasan Wisma Cheshire Indonesia.
