TWO of Irvine’s biggest GP surgeries could be on the move.

Council bosses have refused to deny holding talks with both Townhead and Frew Terrace surgery about moving into the £3million Quarry Road development.

This comes after planning permission was granted for the East Park office block as part of Stage One of the project.

Funding applications are underway for Stage Two which could bring an indoor football arena and potentially attract a cinema to Quarry Road.

Business Gateway and KA Leisure will move into the office building once the Magnum Leisure Centre closes for good.

But it has emerged that the two surgeries could be amalgamated in Quarry Road as part of the major development.

Townhead Surgery has previously been tipped to close in the past few years but no firm proposals were ever put forward.

The fresh talks, however, are still at an early stage and could change when Labour take over the running of North Ayrshire Council.

A council spokesperson refused to deny talks to move the surgeries.

They said: “Following planning approval of the Phase One proposals for Quarry Road, we will now explore all options for the site.

“We will be speaking with a number of potential businesses and partners over the coming weeks but, at this early stage, will not be commenting until firm proposals are in place.”

The relocation of the two surgeries could cause further traffic to the Quarry Road site, an issue that concerns Irvine West Councillor Ian Clarkson.

He said: “The people of Irvine are fed up with roadworks and diversions. I am clear - I would like to see the site developed but these issues must be dealt with.”
